The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act(HIPAA) was enacted by the U.S. Congress in 1996. The Standards for Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information are rules promulgated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under HIPAA to protect the privacy of health information. The Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation (TDMHMR) is a covered entity under HIPAA as a health care provider.
TDMHMR's Notice of Privacy Practices describes how TDMHMR may use or disclose the health information of individuals who receive services from TDMHMR. It is also available in Spanish (PDF 99K). Paper copies of the Notice are available at all TDMHMR facilities. Medicaid Recipients may access the Medicaid Notice of Privacy Practices at the Texas Department of Human Services website.
